Nigeria named the worst place to be born in 2013

Warren Buffett, probably the world's most successful investor, has said that anything good that happened to him could be traced back to the fact that he was born in the right country, the United States,

at the right time (1930). A quarter of a century ago, when The World in 1988 light-heartedly ranked 50 countries according to where would be the best place to be born in 1988, America indeed came top. But which country will be the best for a baby born in 2013? To answer this, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a sister company of The Economist, has this time turned deadly serious. It earnestly attempts to measure which country will provide the best opportunities for a healthy, safe and prosperous life in the years ahead.

Its quality-of-life index links the results of subjective life-satisfaction surveys—how happy people say they are—to objective determinants of the quality of life across countries. Being rich helps more than anything else, but it is not all that counts; things like crime, trust in public institutions and the health of family life matter too. In all, the index takes 11 statistically significant indicators into account. They are a mixed bunch: some are fixed factors, such as geography; others change only very slowly over time (demography, many social and cultural characteristics); and some factors depend on policies and the state of the world economy. A forward-looking element comes into play, too. Although many of the drivers of the quality of life are slow-changing, for this ranking some variables, such as income per head, need to be forecast. We use the EIU's economic forecasts to 2030, which is roughly when children born in 2013 will reach adulthood.

MTN New Mobile TV Service Turns Your Blackberry To TV

MTN launches Mobile TV on data enabled phones - I believe Most of Us here already Heard about this, Take it if you've not.

Customers of Nigeria’s Leading Information and Communications Technology (ICT) company, MTN, will soon be able to watch live TV on their data-enabled handsets, as the company rolls out its new Mobile TV service.

MTN Mobile TV service offers live streaming of TV content and ‘made for mobile’ video to data-enabled handsets such as Blackberry, iPhone and Samsung Galaxy range of phones, as well as tablets, such as iPad and Galaxy Tab, among others.

Although a type of mobile TV service was pioneered by MTN in 2007, it was on the Digital Video Broadcasting for Handheld (DVB-H) platform, which requires customers to purchase special handsets to enjoy the service.

However, for the first time in Nigeria, any data-enabled phone or device can watch television programmes and related content from up to twenty TV channels on his phone via MTN Mobile TV service.

“All our customers need to do to enjoy this service is to activate the WAP browser on their mobile handsets and devices; they can either access MTN Mobile TV packages via the MTN Play Portal, or by typing in the address of the Mobile TV portal www.mtnonline.com/imoovtv and they are good to go,” said Mr. Larry Annetts, Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer, MTN Nigeria.

He said that customers can also send a short message service (SMS) with the keyword “Mobile TV” to a short code and they will be sent the link to the Mobile TV portal.

Mr. Annetts explained that there would be three bouquets to choose from, depending on a customer’s budget and it would be possible to subscribe to one or more Mobile TV bouquets. Speaking further, he explained that each bouquet comprises a selection of TV channels providing a variety of content ranging from news to sport and entertainment, among others.

A distinct advantage of the service is that customers will be able to select the channels of their choice from a bouquet of channels provided, he added.

Mr. Annetts stated that MTN Mobile TV service is already active on the MTN network and will be available commercially to customers shortly.

MTN Nigeria’s Corporate Services Executive, Mr. Akinwale Goodluck, in his comments said “MTN Mobile TV is another addition to a long list of innovative products and services we have developed for the benefit of our customers.” He said the introduction of the service bears testimony to the commitment of the company to lead innovation and customer satisfaction in the industry.

Connecticut school shooting: Children among 27 killed

Twenty children and six adults have been killed in a shooting attack at a primary school in the US state of Connecticut, police say.

The gunman also died, but was not formally identified by police.
However, officials told US media the killer at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Newtown, was a 20-year-old son of a teacher at the school.
It is one of the worst-ever US school shootings, with a toll close to the 32 who died at Virginia Tech in 2007.
Early reports named 24-year-old Ryan Lanza as the gunman, but anonymous officials later said his brother Adam, 20, was the suspect.
He is thought to have killed their mother, named as Nancy Lanza, before heading to the school where she worked as a teacher to carry out the killings.
Ryan Lanza was being questioned by police, the Associated Press news agency and New York Times reported, but has not been named as a suspect.
'Safest place in America' Police Lt Paul Vance said 18 children were pronounced dead at the school, and two died after being taken to hospital. Six adults were also killed, and the gunman died at the scene.

One person was also injured, and police were investigating a second crime scene in Newtown, where another victim was found dead - understood to be the gunman's mother.

Police were also reported to be investigating a location in Hoboken, New Jersey, but it is not clear whether there is a connection to the shooting.
Dressed in black and wearing a bullet-proof vest, the gunman is thought to have had several weapons, although it is not clear whether he used more than one.
The weapons included two handguns - a Glock and a Sig Sauer - and a .223-calibre rifle, reports said.
The killings took place in two rooms within a single section of the school, police have said.
One parent, Stephen Delgiadice, whose eight-year-old daughter was at Sandy Hook School on Friday but was not harmed, said the shooting was traumatic for the small town.
"It's alarming, especially in Newtown, Connecticut, which we always thought was the safest place in America," Mr Delgiadice told the Associated Press.
A memorial service is taking place at a church in Newtown. People crowded outside the doors of the church as Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy addressed those gathered.
He called the attack a "tragedy of unspeakable terms", saying "you can never be prepared" for an event like this.
In Washington, about 200 people held a candlelight vigil for the victims outside the White House.
